Ciao, I’m Kat
Benvenuti! I’m Katherine Garone.
I had heavy food imprinting from the start, growing up in the U.S. My parents were living the California-avocado & sprouts- lifestyle way before it was cool, and food at home was largely vegetarian.
On the flip-side, my sets of nonni couldn’t be more different. My moms’ side living on a farm along a river in Maryland. My granddad, John, farmed the land and grandmother Margaret cooked and preserved all the seasonal bounty as it rolled in, the real farm-to-table scenario.
My dads’ side from NYC, first generation Italian-American, loyal to their meatballs in red sauce, lasagne, escarole & cannoli. My grandpa Jim, basically carried a shaker of red pepper flakes in his pocket (just in case). My grandma Liz, instilled the love for Italian food in me. We made everything together and if we weren’t making it, we were talking (endlessly) about food.
The craze never left me. Food was a fascination. So, I dove deeper. I cooked in kitchens from the U.S. to Taiwan to Italy. Hungry for flavor, for understanding, for experience. Though, it was life in Italy, where I really mastered cooking.
I cooked professionally in a sustainable Roman kitchen, hosted endless dinner parties, picked up insider tricks from my Tuscan momma-in-law, joined a community garden, became an olive oil taster, did a master’s degree in Italian gastronomic culture (yes, that actually exists here) and currently, teach university students sustainable food practices & lead food tours (both group with eating europe and privately), all over Rome. Basically, food is my life.
I want to share that passion with you. I’ve got the experiential tips-of-the-trade from my ten years living, exploring, eating, and cooking in Italy.
